Clarissa Wei

Hi! I'm an American freelance journalist currently wandering China and Taiwan. My goal is to eventually visit all the provincial-level administrative units in China. There are 34 official ones. So far, I've visited 12.

I've written stories for VICE, Eater, LA Weekly, LA Times, Village Voice, BBC, CNN, CBS, First We Feast, Food Network, Time Out Los Angeles, Serious Eats, Bold Italic, KCET, Brit + Co, Discover Los Angeles. I've contributed to Fodor's Los Angeles and wrote the food and beverage sections for Louis Vuitton's Taipei guidebook (2017). You may have seen me on Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, CBS Los Angeles, or on CCTV talking Chinese food. I used to lead food tours in Los Angeles. I was a former food columnist for KCET. Once I gave a speech to NASA about Chinese food.

I'm mostly interested in sustainability, food, and ancient cultures. I prefer farms to cities.

Los Angeles is home; New York City is where I went to college. I've also lived in Shanghai and Taipei. I used to hike incredibly active volcanoes in Nicaragua as a volunteer backpacking guide where we did overnight trips and took people volcano boarding. I got terribly lost in the jungle once there; it ended up being an incredible bonding experience.  I've scuba dived around the world; I enjoy sea turtles, sharks, and giant manta rays. I've snorkeled with a pod of dolphins and whale sharks (separate occasions!). I learned how to free dive in Utila where I reached 70 feet with rope and 50 ft with fins. Wilderness First Aid certified; fluent in Mandarin Chinese.

Living my dream life. Eventually I hope to end up at a farm or jungle or small village with plenty of stars and wonderful people -- preferably by the beach.
